CENTRAL AMERICA STUDENT CONVENTION 2010 (Post #7)

It isn't always about being the best, or winning a medal...sometimes it is about overcoming a fear and completing a task and seeing what you can accomplish!

That is the case with two of my students, Karen and Sandy. After arriving on Tuesday morning they both, out of fear, decided that they did not want to run their races that they were registered for. They were both registered to run the 400 meter race, which is one time around the track.

They came to me and said they didn't want to run. I told them they needed to compete, not to be afraid and really didn't give them the option of dropping out. They went away with long faces....but after some more pep talks they both decided they would run.

Karen finished her race....though part of it she walked...she finished! I was so very proud of her, and she was happy with herself that she had tried and completed the race!

Sandy still wasn't so sure about running when it came time for her to run....but we all gathered around her and encouraged her to overcome that fear. She got about a third of the way around the track and stopped....I went running across the field with 4 other girls following me and we ran beside her for the rest of the race encouraging her to just keep going...finish the race!

She came across the finish line and all her friends were cheering her on!

Other girls that day were afraid when it came time for them to run....but they had seen an example in Karen and Sandy, to overcome that fear!

I am so proud of these two girls!!!! They finished their race! And learned to overcome fear!
